.79 cent coffee in Maplewood New Jersey

March 8 is International Women’s Day, when women across the world are encouraged to go on strike to create “A Day Without a Woman,” to show economic solidarity, protest the gender wage gap and work toward forging a more gender-equal world.

It has been cited that women earn about 79 cents for every dollar men make at work; that number is even lower for minority women. Women will strike from paid — and unpaid — work, wear red and avoid patronizing businesses unless they are women- or minority-owned.

“We want this to be a day where women feel empowered to take a stance on their value in the workplace and the world beyond,” Women’s March spokesperson Cassady Fendlay said.

Here in Maplewood, The Able Baker will be selling specially decorated cookies with “pro-women” messages (available to all), and drip coffee “at 79¢ on the dollar for women only, in support of wage equality,” said owner Julie Pauly.

The coffee promotion was the brainchild of Pauly’s daughter, Ella, who is 17 and a senior at Columbia High School in Maplewood New Jersey.

While you’re in the Village make sure to patronize the other women-owned businesses in town, including Lotus Petals, Shenanigan’s, Palmer’s Sweetery, Perch Home, and many, many more. (Feel free to give a shout-out to any others in SOMA in comments).
