Cappuccino Day is a thing

Not satisfied with National Coffee day...

Well today is National Cappuccino Day. Read on.

National Cappuccino day is observed annually on 8 November, giving you the perfect opportunity to meet with friends and enjoy a creamy cuppa.

Cappuccino – traditionally prepared with espresso, hot milk and steamed foam – is an Italian coffee drink.

The word ‘cappuccino’ is derived from the name of the Capuchin Friars. The Capuchin Friars are an order of friars within the Catholic Church, and are among the chief offshoots of the Franciscan monks. ‘Cappuccino’ is the diminutive form of the Italian word ‘cappuccio’, which means hood or something covering the head. However, the popular coffee beverage’s name did not come from the hood on the friars’ habits, but from the colour of the hooded robes they wear.

Some interesting cappuccino facts:

  • Achille Gaggia invented the modern espresso machine in 1945 and further popularised the cappuccino.
  • Cappuccino became more widely available to North Americans in the mid-1990s, as upscale coffee houses sprang up.
  • With the boom in the American coffee industry in the late 1990s to early 2000s, cappuccinos became even more popular.
  • A modified short-cut version of the beverage began to be served in fast food outlets at the start of the 21st century.
  • To make cappuccino – one of the most difficult espresso based beverages -properly, you need to pay close attention to attain the correct ratio of foam while steaming the milk.
  • Artistic shapes can be made by a skilled barista while he/ she is pouring the milk on top of the espresso coffee.

To celebrate today, gather your friends and family and visit your favourite coffee shop to enjoy a hot, delicious cup of cappuccino.
