Coffee Shops of Hamilton Ontario
During my recent vist to check out the coffee culture in Hamilton I found that Steeltown has done it as well as any major city that I've ever visited and the Coffee Culture in Hamilton is alive and well. Hamilton coffee shops are taking advantage of the great old buildings to create shops that have that unqiue Hamilton feel. When I was a student at McMaster University I rented some of the old houses with the high ceilings and great plaster mouldings of the late 20's and early 30's. Much of this architecture has been saved in some of the old buildings in and around Hamilton and Dundas to create a great cult coffee environment.
1.
Detour Coffee: I stopped here because I'd heard about a small local roaster that had opened a small cafe. Roastery based coffee shops often have a great techincal coffee but the can feel like your have a break in the back of a factory. Not this place. It has an airy, bright atmosphere, great sweet treats, baked goods, soups, salads and the like, fabulous Detour roasted beans; 41 King St. West, Dundas.
2.
The Cannon: In the middle of my trip I stopped at the Cannon for lunch. It has a great contemporary style and design with a great people-watching window where I sat and enjoyed a delicious lunch and great espresso that was strong but not bitter; 179 Ottawa St. North.
3.
Mulberry Street Coffee House: Back in the day I did my laundry here. I rented a place just around the corner. I has a great casual atmosphere, obviously a great go-to place for meet-ups, a cup of coffee to go, ginger molasses cookie or a savoury muffin. The service was awsome and the atmosphere was friendly. You could tell that there were lots of regulars as evidenced by the banter between the staff and the customers.I had a great Cafe Americano and my friend enjoyed a well put together latte. ; 193 James St. North.
