Hot Straw Introduces POS Display for Retailers

July 29, 2013, Denver, CO—Hot Straw, LLC, the Denver-based manufacturer of the only FDA-approved plastic straw for use with hot beverages, announced this week a new point-of-sale countertop retail display for retailers to promote the product at their point of purchase.

Originally conceived as an aid for Parkinson’s disease patients who couldn’t drink hot beverages due to hand tremors, Hot Straw is the brainchild of clinical researcher Dawn Miracle. She knew that common plastic soda straws release harmful plasticizers and other chemicals when used with hot drinks. That led her to design a sturdy dual-chambered straw made of BPA-free plastic that can withstand the heat of coffee and tea without leaching out harmful chemicals.

The general public adopted the Hot Straw for its other benefits. Its patent-pending oval shape fits perfectly into the lids of to-go coffee cups, protecting against spills and accidental burns. Because the Hot Straw moves tooth-staining tannins and chromogens onto the tongue bypassing the teeth, the straw was an instant hit with dentists and orthodontists who understood it also helped keep decay-causing sugars and acids away.

When Miracle took her product to the Seattle Coffee Fest in September, 2012, it was the talk of the show, named as one of the Top New Products.

With consumer demand and online sales growing, Miracle wanted a way to offer her product to retail outlets in a way that was both convenient and profitable for them. She contacted packaging designers and settled on a 4-straw retail package in a compact point-of-sale “Each display holds 40 packages of reusable, recyclable Hot Straws, and when sold at the suggested retail price it offers a $135 profit to the retailer,” Miracle says. “It will be a big hit with all sorts of businesses, from coffee shops to dentist’s offices.”

Remaining true to her roots, Hot Straw founder and CEO Dawn Miracle and her company are a community partner with the Davis Phinney Foundation, an organization that supports programs and research to help people living with Parkinson’s take more control in managing their disease.

“I’m as committed as ever to helping Parkinson’s patients in any way I can,” she says. “That’s why I’ve pledged 5% of our company profits to go toward Parkinson’s research.”
