There have been many products that we’ve shared with you this year. From automated coffee making robots to custom printed cups. It was a hard decision but in the end we’re not going to pick a product or a company we’re going to pick in industry. Our product of the year is the local micro roaster. I set out this year to interview and taste coffee from my local roasters. What I discovered wasn’t the best micro roaster but a virtual cornucopia of flavor experiences.
Within an hour of Toronto Canada I was able to visit over twenty local coffee roasters and watch them create for me their unique specialty blends. I walked through the Tardis in Cambridge, sat in a cool little shop on Yonge St. where they roast in building. I watched a local coffee delivery service crank out thousands of pounds of coffee just before Christmas while giving each batch the personal care and attention that it deserved.
I learned that the process to required to keep Organic, FairTrade and DirectTrade logos on packing it strict and well enforced. The notes that these roasters keep for their audits are on par with any laboratory that I’ve seen in my life. So in Ontario if you see those labels you can be assured that you’re getting what you’ve paid for.
I took pounds and pounds of coffee home to see if I could mimic the experience that had in their coffee shops. Most of it was just like the café some of it was lacking but it was all a wonderful experience.
If you are a true coffee lover you’ll do yourself a favor and go on a little road trip to experience the local roasters around you. I found the experience of talking to the local roasters and being exposed to their passion one of the most rewarding this year. And if you’re a lucky as I was you’ll find one or two brews that will knock your socks off and you’ll find your true favorite coffee.
