What are you serving?

The reality is your coffee is made of two things: coffee grounds and water, so it goes without saying that it is important you have good water. Chances are if you are on city water you are okay, so long as it is not over chlorinated. You can simply smell the water to check this.

If you are on well water, you may want to check the hardness of the water. If the water is too soft or too hard it is not good for your brew, and you may have to treat the water, or look into using a form of bottled water.

If you are using tap water make sure you run the water for a little while first, and always use cold water as this will ensure your tap water is at its freshest form.

Last, but certainly not least, is the cleaning of the machine and carafes. Dirty equipment will also add undesirable flavors to your coffee. On average, you should completely clean your machine every 100 brew cycles.  However, even with this you need to wipe down and clean the brew section of the machine, including the basket and spray spout, daily, as well as thoroughly cleaning your carafes or urns.

By taking the time to ensure these few easy steps are covered off, you will be rewarding yourself with the best brew possible.
